Truro Swimmer Selected for ASA England Talent Camp ...

Truro City swimmer Jack Middleton has been rewarded for the many hours of dedicated swimming by being selected to take part in the ASA England Talent Development Camp 2008-09 for open water swimming.

As well as competing in this years 3 kilometres at the Nationals in Sheffield Jack also completed two 5 kilometre open water swims this summer.  The first swim was in Norfolk, in one of the Norfolk Broads (very black and cold) where he won a bronze medal in his age group .

The second at the British Festival of Open Water swimming at the national open water centre near Nottingham  where he swam a Personal Best time of 1 hour 6 minutes in atrocious conditions, finishing 15th out of 28 overall - a fantastic swim against some of the best swimmers in the country, all despite being punched in the face as he dived off the pontoon at the start - yes, it is as rough as it looked on the Olympics!.

The first of the series of Talent Development Camps took place at Cardiff International Pool last weekend, 20th & 21st September.  The venue at Cardiff is brand new 50 metre pool with all glass and 10-lanes,  Jack said it was 'amazing'.  He had 2 swimming sessions with John Rudd (one of which included 2000 metres of leg kick with a float - ouch! painfull), a land training session, an individual session with a physiotherapist and theory training.

Jack has come away with a clear idea of what he needs to do to improve - expect to see him and his float leg-kicking for all he's worth from now on at the Truro Leisure Centre.

The next step on Jack's journey is a 10 kilometre swim - there are not many of these so he may have to wait until next summer, but he swam 13.35 kilometres in one day at the Development Camp so he should be up to the challenge.

Well done Jack, keep up the hard work!
