Truro City Juniors make a good start at this early season opener ...

Truro City Swimming Club took a continguent of its Junior members to the 2012 Carn Brea & Helston Open. For some of the younger swimmers not only was it their first taste of competition outside of their club, but for a few it was their first official licensed meet; for all of them not only did they have a great day but many came away with new personal best times.

Ordinarily this popular meet attracts many swimmers from outside of Cornwall because of its mixed distance format and coupled with the fact that this competition is the first opportunity for swimmers to record a season bench marker or look how they have progressed after the summer break.

Unfortunately it was noticable that attendance not only from outside of Cornwall was severly lacking, but also from the local clubs where overall attendance was not as high as it has been in previous years. However this did not deter those swimmers who did attend with posting some good early season times.

It also gave the attending Truro coaches an oportunity to formulate the younger elements of the Arena squad, looking at possible combinations and preparation for the forth coming National Arena league round 1 competition.

There were a number of notable swims made, young Sam Norton dominated the 9 Yrs Age Group with 3 Gold and 1 Silver medals. There were other gold medal swims also made by Tom Barton and Matthew Rothwell.

New competitors Roddy Brookes, Chantel Phillips, Mia Rule and Thomas Trebilcock who also won a bronze made an impression.

It was also great to see Hanna James back in the mainstream competitive circuit, the 14 Year Age Grouper has been suffering over the past 2 years with severe knee problems which has dampened her enthusiasm for competition, lets hope she is now on the way to making a full recovery and will be back again racing at every meet.

For all of the swimmers who attended the Carn Brea 2012 Open the day was a success, coming away from the meet with something to help build their confidence for the coming season whether that was a county qualifying time, medal or personal best.

Head Coach Emily Dart was especially pleased with the swimmers performance saying, " Overall the younger swimmers had some great swims and we were extremely happy that there were over 57 personal best times recorded and a lot of medals being brought back which is a superb result so early in the season.  It was also nice to see some swimmers who have not competed before at the meet".

Well done to you all.
