Truro Swimmers off to a good start at the 2012 County Championships!

Last weekend saw the start to this year's swimming County Championships when the distance and relay events were held at Bodmins Dragon Leisure Centre over the Saturday & Sunday.  For many of the Truro City Swimmers it was their first attempt at the distance events of 800m (32 lengths) & 1500m (60 lengths) and they did themselves and the club proud.

Watching the events unfold it was strange not to see Truro's Jack Middleton in attendance, Jack who is now devoting all of his time away studying at Cardiff University has dominated these distance meets for a number of years and now it was up to the young guns of the club George Hollis and Charlie Haynes to take on that mantle.

The first event of the weekend was the women's 800 metre freestyle (32 lengths) in which Truro had swimmers
Jodie Kotenko (11yrs AG), Yolande Barnsley (12yrs AG) and Robyn Edwards (13yrs AG) taking part. The girls swam well trying to judge there pace over the 32 lengths, this is not that easy to do competitively as you are not trying to go out to hard so that you fade, but also so that you dont go out to slow so that you have to much in reserve at the end. Some solid swims saw Yolande and Robyn finish in 4th place in their respective age groups and Jodie a commendable 10th place finish on her first county 800m outing.

The first session finished with the men's 1500 metre freestyle event (60 lengths) in which Truro swimmer George Hollis took 3rd place in the 15 years age group with a great swim of 19.09.21.

The Sunday session started with the 4x200m freestyle relays. Truro teams took top spot in both the 15/17 years girls' race in a time of 9:11.14 (team members Courteney-Lee Reid, Charlotte Hewitt, Mesha Wardman and Josie Williams) and the 15/18 year boys' team in a time of 8:49.71 (George Hollis, Luke Hollis, Matt Hewitt and Tom Bolt). For both the boys 15 years and under team who could not quite catch the Bodmin team and had to settle for 2nd place in a time of 9.51.69(James Carpenter, Charlie Haynes, Ewan Dungavel and Tim Wyatt) and the girls 15 years and under team it was also a similar story and they finished in 5th place with a time of
10:26.47 (Yolande Barnsley,Katy Parkinson, Roby Edwards and Marisa Nicholls).

Following the relay event came the men's 800 metre (32 lengths). For the Truro swimmers it was a similar event as the day before, when for many of the boys this was their first go at this distance in race conditions and they were swimming into competiive unchartered waters. James Carpenter (13yrs AG) was first up and swam a good race to finish in 5th place, Charlie Haynes who known more for his sprint swimming, swam a great race to take 3rd place in the 14 years age group and 3rd place overall in the Junior Chmpionships just edgng out team mate George Hollis in to 5th place.

That left the Women's 1500 metre freestyle event to end the second session and even though Truro City had no swimmers it was good to see ex Truro City swimmer Kay deCourcydominate the event to win.

WELL DONE TO ALL THE TRURO SWIMMERS WHO TOOK PART!
