4 TRURO CITY SWIMMERS MAKE IAPS NATIONAL SWIMMING FINALS K2 Crawley 10th May 2014
The Independent Prep Schools (IAPS) run a highly competitive swimming competition each year where prep schools from across the UK compete in county and regional rounds to see if they have qualified for the national final.
Ages are arranged in year group not age on day. Truro Prep swimmers and Truro City Swimming club members, all in year 6 Sam Norton, Alexander Beaumont, William Becconsall and Luke Barnsley qualified as a medley team and Sam and Luke qualified for individual races for breaststroke and backstroke.
Swimmers are only allowed to swim one individual stroke race. Competition is tough especially with notable strong swimming schools taking part including Millfield, Dragon School, Dulwich Prep and Plymouth College. The boys travelled up to the awesome K2 leisure centre in Crawley and were supported brilliantly by Matt Trewhella, Alison Russell and the head of Truro Prep himself Matthew Lovett attending his first ever swimming gala!
Great team spirit saw the medley 100m team make a 6 second pb to finish a fantastic 6th in a time of 1.12.26 beating Plymouth College by 8 seconds – Will swam back, Sam breast, Luke fly and Alexander free. In the 50m backstroke Luke improved his seed time by a second to finish a commendable 10th overall and 2nd reserve for the finals with 38.13 where the first two boys broke the existing record in times of 33.30 and 33.40. Sam swam an awesome preliminary heat to make the final with a time of 38.22 only to improve his time again in the final to 37.87 to secure a bronze with the overall winner just ahead in 36.77. Very exciting swimming and excellent results. Well done boys!
