Team Truro Senior swimmers take it the next level at the annual regional championships.

Truro City Swimming Club were well represented at the annual ASA Southwest Regional Youth Swimming Championships held recently at the Life Centre, Plymouth.

After a highly successful Cornwall County Championships back in March this year and through continued progress, committed training and long course gala’s a crop of our Senior Squad swimmers made the grade to test themselves amongst the best of the Southwest at the next level in this year’s regional youth championships.

The event held over the bank holiday weekend matched the best swimmers from across the South and West of England for a chance of glory against each other in the 50m long course swimming pool.

In the female 15 year old age group Jodie Kotenko swam very well and was competitive in all her races. A specialist breaststroke and fly swimmer she put in some great performances in the 100 Fly, 50 Breast and 100 Breast. Jodie upped her game in the 200 Breast to finish a very creditable 6th place overall in the heats thus qualifying her for a regional final. Jodie went one better in the final with a focussed performance to achieve a 2 second quicker PB to cement 5th overall in her age group final.

In the male 15 year old age group the club was particularly very well represented. Euan Dungavel a specialist front crawler qualified and was entered in three events. Swimming in his first regional championships at this higher level against tough competition Euan raced hard to put in some creditable performances in the 50, 100 and 1500 freestyle events. Oscar Davies a competent fly swimmer also was experiencing regional swimming for the first time. Good performances earlier in the season had Oscar make the grade in two events. Effective swimming had Oscar competitive and swim fast in both the 50 and 100 Fly. Club Vice Captain Jack Rogers was the last but not least member of the male 15 year old age group. Jack had a very busy weekend qualifying and thus entered in nine events. A strong swimmer across all the events Jack’s swimming was highly effective gaining great results in 50 back, 100 back, 200 back, 50 freestyle, 50 fly, 200 IM and 200 Breast events. A multiple County Champion and breaststroke specialist Jack was always going to be in the mix for his favourite 100 and 50 breaststroke events. Jack did not disappoint, in the heats of the 100 breast he qualified for the final with a fourth and went one better in the final to finish a cracking third. The 50 metre breast was his stand out performance; qualifying fastest Jack took this form into the final winning and cementing a regional champion title!

In the male 19 year old age group the club had two more senior swimmers experiencing regional level swimming for the first time. Former club captain Chris Harris took a break from his international Pentathlon training and competitions to compete in five events over the weekend. Chris as always swam hard and gave his all against very tough competition in the 50 fly, 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 breast and 200 IM showing he is competent across all the strokes. New club member Matt Aldous-Horne who has had a great first season with Truro City juggled his university studies and commitments to make the grade and swim at these championships. Matt another breaststroke specialist put in solid performances in the both the 100 and 200 breast, also showed he is pretty efficient across the strokes in 200 IM.

Other club members were also swimming hard and competing at this year’s championship. Truro swimmer 14 year old Lilly Parsons who is an associate member with the highly successful Plymouth Leander club. Fresh from her amazing performances at the recent British Championships at the London Aquatic Centre Lilly was swimming in the female relays for Plymouth. Our associate member 15 year old Nick Laws had an amazing weekend. Swimming for Millfield Nick took his form from the recent Bristol Open and British Championships into this meet. Nick a multiple county champion had some smoking PB’s resulting in numerous finals and gaining regional titles along the way. Another associate member 16 year old Robbie Nielsen was swimming hard and fast and highly competitive for his is ranked club Mount Kelly.

WELL DONE to all!! Everyone at the club is extremely proud of their achievements this year; all have worked hard and deserve the rewards from the dedication and commitment they have shown.
